A Study of Relationship Between Individual Aspects of Empowerment With General Health in Older Adults Referred to Tehran Neighborhood Houses in 2019-2020

Objectives: Due to the rapid growth of the elderly population, the need to pay attention to this group is more obvious than ever. Numerous individual factors, including self-efficacy, self-control and self-esteem are effective in the general health of the elderly. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between individual aspects of empowerment with general health in older adults referred to Tehran Neighborhood Houses in 2019-2020. Methods & Materials In this descriptive-analytical cross-sectional study, 320 elderly men and women over 60 years were selected by cluster sampling. Data were collected using a two-part questionnaire including demographic characteristics and standard questionnaires of general health (GHQ-28), general self-efficacy (GSE-10), Rosenberg self-esteem and Tangier short self-control.Data in SPSS version 22 was described using central statistical indices and dispersion and analyzed using chi-square and Pearson correlation coefficient, one-way-ANOVA and linear regression. Results: The mean and standard deviation of age of the elderly was 68.42±8.3 and general health was 21.95±13.4. A significant negative correlation was found between general health, general self-efficacy, self-esteem and self-control (p <0.001). There was a significant relationship between general health,education (p <0.001), duration of employment (p <0.002) and housing (p <0.001). Also, multivariate regression results showed Housing status (P = 0.156), self-esteem (P <0.001), self-control (P <0.001) and self-efficacy (P <0.001) are significant predictors of general health components. Conclusion: There was a correlation between general health, general self-efficacy, self-esteem and self-control. There was also a significant relationship between general health, education, duration of employment and housing. Based on the results of multivariate regression, the variables of housing status, self-esteem, self-control and general self-efficacy are predictors of general health components and should be considered in elderly health promotion programs.
